Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala, is a government school established in 1888, by the Buddhist Theosophical Society led by Colonel Henry Steel Olcott. It is one of Sri Lanka’s oldest schools and considered by many to be a leading Buddhist school in Sri Lanka. It is a National School and controlled by the Central government. The term ‘Devans” is being used to call the former/ present pupils of Maliyadeva College.
In June 1888, a new school with one student was opened at a place in Bodhiraja Mawatha near the present Central Bus Stand in Kurunegala, pioneered by Anagarika Dharmapala and Colonel Henry Steel Olcott with the assistance of local donors; Messrs. Hulugalle, Adikaram and Mudaliyar Attygala. This school was named as “Kurunegala Buddhist Institution”
The school has a student population exceeding 5,169 across 13 grades from primary to secondary classes. The academic staff of more than 300 is led by Principal Wasantha Ranjith Jayasundara since 2020.
In 2012, a significant move was made with the formal establishment of the Maliyadeva College Old Boys Association in the United Arab Emirates. This initiative was geared towards bringing together Old Devans living in the UAE, thereby fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie. This association not only nurtures a strong community among the alumni but also acts as a pivotal support mechanism for Maliyadeva College in Sri Lanka. Its role extends beyond mere representation; it actively contributes to and participates in various events within the UAE. Moreover, the association aligns itself with the Olcott Schools in the UAE, which, like Maliyadeva College, were established by Sir Henry Steel Olcott and share a rich, common heritage.
Additionally, the association is committed to supporting fellow Sri Lankans in the UAE and back in Sri Lanka through various charity initiatives and development programs. These efforts encompass a wide range of activities, from cultural and educational events to charitable endeavors, thereby strengthening the bonds within the Sri Lankan community and reinforcing the values and legacy of Maliyadeva College.
